You can't build your own home without having a piece of land. If you have all the steps planned out, trades people lined up and material suppliers organized the project will never get started without your plot of land to build on. There are traditional ways to find vacant land, Zillow, Realtor or Realtor(Canada) are all excellent resources to search for vacant land to build your home however there are also other less traditional options available. If there is a certain area your are looking to build on you can drive around there and see what is vacant, if you find vacant land you can go to your local land titles or land registry office find out who the owner is and make an offer. I've done this before and you would be surprised how many times people are willing and happy to part with that piece of land. Personally though my favourite method to buy vacant property is through tax auctions. When city taxes are not paid many municipalities will auction off these properties at a fraction of their value, you can save thousands of dollars on your new home before you even start building your new home! Using any of these methods you can find vacant land to start building your new home.
